CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL: what do these abbreviations means?

Recordable CDs (recognisable by the letter R) are discs on which you can record once only, and which have storage capacities of 700 MB, or the equivalent of nearly 500 floppy disks.

Recordable DVDs (recognisable by the letter R) are discs on which you can record once only, and which have storage capacities of 4.7 GB, or the equivalent of nearly 3,300 floppy disks.

DVD+R DL are discs on which you can record once only, and which have storage capacities of 8.5 GB, or the equivalent of nearly 6,000 floppy disks.

The letters RW mean that the discs are rewritable. DVD+ and DVD- corresponds to two different recording standards; the standard DVD- being the most widespread.
